The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) and the Department of National Planning and Monitoring (DNPM) of Papua New Guinea (PNG) held a joint seminar for academic and policy makers at UPNG and ANU. The session, which hosted participants both in person and virtually via zoom focused on the application of macroeconomic modeling tools to generate evidence that guides policies and investments in PNG, recognizing the need for future development pathways that lead to economic growth, employment and improved livelihoods.
A central focus of the event was on the applications of the tool to the fourth Medium-Term Development Plan (MTDP IV, 2023-2027), which prioritizes diversified growth and aims to expanded the benefits to development to all Papua New Guineans. The presenters emphasized that the success of the MTDP IV depends heavily on strengthening data and evidence for policy formulation, investment planning, and ex ante and ex post evaluations.
The analysis was based on an economy-wide Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) model—developed by IFPRI in collaboration with the Government of PNG, using the 2019 Social Accounting Matrix (SAM) as its database, the presenters provided a detailed analysis of how MTDP IV investments impact economic growth across key sectors including transport, energy, communications, and agriculture.
