On Monday, 14 September 2026, International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) participated in an Australia Awards training session held at PwC Haus in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea. The session was organized in collaboration with Australian Center for International Agriculture Research (ACIAR) and the University of Queensland and brought together mid- to senior-level professionals from government agencies, development organizations, academia, and the private sector across Papua New Guinea.
The cohort included participants working across agriculture, food systems, climate resilience, natural resource management, and related fields. Dr. Kwaw Andam, IFPRI Country Program Leader for Papua New Guinea, led the session and was accompanied by Peggy Kala, Research Analyst at IFPRI. The presentation focused on IFPRI’s - Fresh Food Price Analysis in Papua New Guinea tool, which is being implemented in collaboration with the Fresh Produce Development Agency (FPDA).
The presentation highlighted how food price data can be used to monitor fresh food markets, assess price trends, and support policy and planning decisions. Participants were introduced to the online platform and encouraged to consider how the tool can support rapid assessments of market conditions, particularly in the context of El Niño preparedness and broader food systems resilience.
Following the presentation, participants took part in a facilitated discussion and question-and-answer session. The discussion allowed participants to reflect on how evidence-based tools and real-time market information can inform planning, preparedness, and decision-making within their respective organizations and sectors.
The session showed IFPRI’s continued commitment to supporting policy engagement, analytical capacity strengthening, and evidence-based planning in Papua New Guinea’s food systems sector.
Key outcome The session strengthened participants’ understanding of IFPRI’s work in Papua New Guinea and demonstrated the practical value of food price data for market monitoring, policy analysis, and evidence-based decision-making. It also provided a platform for continued engagement between IFPRI, ACIAR, the University of Queensland, and Australia Awards participants on food systems resilience, research, and capacity development.
